Marilla of Green Gables, by Sarah McCoy. This tale of life at Green Gables before Anne begins in the nineteenth century when Marilla takes on an adult’s chores at 13 after her mother dies in childbirth. Growing up burdened by her many responsibi­lities, she is drawn to the life of her spinster aunt, a woman who managed to escape Avonlea to make her own way in the wider world.

The Shepherd’s Hut, by Tim Winton. A young man flees his violent home, traversing the vast West Australian wheat belt with only a rifle and a water jug, staying out of sight long enough to find refuge in the salt country on the edge of the desert. What he finds there will challenge everything he knows about love, death and survival — and will haunt him forever.

The Three Beths, by Jeff Abbott. Mariah Dunning’s mother Beth disappeare­d without a trace, with the suspicion of murder falling upon her father. A Well-Behaved Woman, by Therese Fowler. Set in the golden age of Manhattan, Newport and Paris, this novel follows the life and times of Alva Smith, a southern girl who marries the nouveau-riche William Vanderbilt. Excluded from New York society by the old-money doyennes, she becomes increasing­ly outspoken, brave, and fiercely independen­t, flying in the face of convention by founding the Metropolit­an Opera House, supporting progressiv­e politics and championin­g suffrage for all women.

Non-fiction

The Good Neighbor, by Maxwell King. Through interviews, archival documents, and oral histories, this first full-length biography of Fred Rogers tells the story of the beloved children’s television personalit­y.

From the Corner of the Oval, by Beck Dorey-Stein. In 2012, a Craigslist posting led Beck Dorey-Stein to a job in the White House. In this memoir she shares her adventures working as a stenograph­er in the Oval Office for President Barack Obama.

Fly Girls, by Keith O’Brien. This is the little known story of a group of female pilots who fought for the chance to fly competitiv­ely against men in the popular air shows of the 1920s and 1930s.
