Driver to return to court for sentencing

Motorcycle licence plate was made of paper; driver was also disqualified

A disqualified driver who was nabbed at a RIDE check point riding a motorcycle with a piece of paper as a licence plate will learn his fate in the new year.

Dwayne Lewis, 47, of Fort Erie, pleaded guilty Friday in an Ontario Court of Justice in St. Catharines to two counts of drive while disqualified and a single count of driving with an excessive blood/alcohol level.

On June 5, court was told, Lewis was stopped by police leaving the Beer Store in Fort Erie. At the time of his arrest, he was prohibited from driving in Ontario.

Two months later, on Aug. 4, he attempted to drive past a RIDE check point in Port Colborne on a motorcycle.

When stopped by police, officers discovered the licence plate on the motorcycle was made of paper and the helmet Lewis was wearing did not comply with current legislation.

Also, police determined the defendant, who admitted to them he was a disqualified driver, had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

Lewis will be sentenced Jan. 22.
