Falcons extend point streak to 12 games

- BERND FRANKE

One of junior B hockey’s hottest teams is showing no signs of cooling off.

After starting the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League season with three losses in their first four games, the St. Catharines Falcons have only lost once in 12 games.

Even then, they didn’t come away empty-handed, earning a consolation in an overtime loss.

Their winning ways continued Saturday night in Fort Erie, where they soared past the Meteors 9-1.

St. Catharines improved to 3-0 against Fort Erie and to 12-3-0-1 overall, good enough for second in the Golden Horseshoe Conference, one point behind the idle Hamilton Kilty B’s, 13-4.

The seventh-place Meteors lost their second game in a row to fall to 4-12-0-1.

St. Catharines outshot Fort Erie 49-16 and jumped out to a 9-0 lead. Jack McGovern was 2:21 away from recording the second shutout of his junior career when Noah Desmarais found the back of the net for the Meteors.

Xavier Drummond, Carson Edwardson, Dakota Miskolczi and Kyle West scored two goals apiece and Jacob Roach one for the Falcons.

St. Catharines went 2-for-4 on the power play; Fort Erie, 0-for-5.

Sunday action in the Golden Horseshoe had the Meteors at the Pelham Panthers, 11-7-0-1; and the Niagara Falls Canucks, 15-20-1; visiting the Welland Jr. Canadians, 5-12.

St. Catharines is back in action 7 p.m. today against the Kilty B’s at Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena in Hamilton.

Canucks 8, Blackhawks 3

The Niagara Falls Canucks found their way back into the win column, but only after they found the back of the net.

After being limited to five goals in their last two games, both of them losses, the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League team scored nearly that many in the second period alone when it hosted the Thorold Blackhawks Friday night at Gale Centre.

They jumped out to 5-0 lead on their way to snapping a two-game losing streak.

Niagara Falls improved to a Golden Horseshoe Conference leading 15-2-0-1. Fifth-place Thorold fell to 6-10-1-0 overall and to 0-3 versus the Canucks in headto-head play so far this season.

Patrick McCabe, with two goals; Brandon Bastasin, Eric Becker, Garrett Downie, Dillon Hill, Matthew Riva and Alec Vent scored for Niagara Falls. Jonah Devereux, Nick Gidney and Trevor Neumann provided the offence for Thorold.

Zach Moore stopped 33 of 36 shots to get the win, while Anthony Tremonte was tagged with the loss after surrendering eight goals on 42 shots.

Niagara Falls visited Welland Sunday night.

Next action for the Blackhawks is 7:07 p.m. Thursday when they host Pelham.
