Golden Globes kick off awards season

The Standard (St. Catharines) - - Arts & Life -

Award show season officially kicked off Thursday morning with the 2019 Golden Globe nominations and already there are many questions: Just how much will the critically adored “A Star Is Born” clean up in the movie drama category?

Will films such as “Green Book” and “First Man” overcome disappointing box office starts to become voter favourites?

On the TV side, will Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” and Amazon’s “The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel” be repeat winners?

Does anyone have a chance against HBO’s “Sharp Objects” star Patricia Clarkson in the supporting actress race?

In addition to possible nods for movies that haven’t been released to the general public yet (“Vice,” “Mary Poppins Returns”), look for some box office smashes to get some attention: Namely, “Black Panther” and “Crazy Rich Asians.” And maybe, if the voters are savvy, “Paddington 2.”

Andy Samberg (NBC’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) and Sandra Oh (BBC America’s “Killing Eve”) will host the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, Jan. 6, on NBC.
