Seedy Saturday set for Feb. 9

-

Details about Seedy Saturday, being held this weekend in Wellandport, were inadvertently left out of Theresa Forte’s “Growing Your Garden” column last week.

It will take place this Saturday, Feb. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Wellandport Community Centre, 5042 Canborough Rd.

For more information contact Linda Crago, 905-386-7388 or treeandtwig@sympatico.ca; check for regular updates on the Niagara Seedy Saturday Facebook page.

Theresa Forte will present “Foodscaping — a delicious garden trend” — at 12:45 p.m.

There are well over 100 Seedy Saturday events across Canada organized by local individuals, groups, farmers and growers, to promote the use of heritage (heirloom) open pollinated varieties of seed and environmentally friendly gardening/farming practices. The heart of the event is the seed exchange; you don’t need to bring your own seeds to be part of the exchange.

Three of the vendors are seed growers, selling seed they produce on their Ontario farms, and they are happy to answer questions. Many experienced growers attend, ready to chat about everything from growing your own now legal pot to nutritional supplements for the garden. Specific subjects to be considered by speakers include growing citrus plants, beekeeping, gardening with children, and integrating vegetables in small spaces.

When you enter you will receive a pack of seed, which you can keep or trade. You can also, for a small donation, pick up extra packets at the seed exchange table. There is also a garden exchange table, where you can bring used but clean tools and pots for others to pick up.

A $2 donation for admission is suggested to help pay the expenses associated with putting on this event, but it is far from mandatory.

Funds in excess of expenses will be donated and split between Seeds of Diversity Canada (Canada’s heritage seed program) and Start Me Up Niagara.
