Fiction

“Bear No Malice,” by Clarissa Harwood. Beaten and left for dead in the English countrysid­e in 1907, clergyman and reformer Tom Cross is rescued by reclusive siblings Miranda and Simon, who seem to have as many secrets as he does. When Tom returns to London, his life quickly unravels as his secrets catch up with him. He returns to Miranda, knowing she is the only person he trusts with the truth, but even their feelings for each other cannot free her from the shackles of her past.

“The Break Line,” by James Brabazon. MI6 operative and assassin Max McLean is sent to Sierra Leone to find and dispose of the mastermind behind rebel forces who are slaughteri­ng innocent villagers. As he hunts his nightmaris­h enemy, he discovers that London may consider him the most disposable piece of the operation.

“Judgment,” by Joseph Finder. Juliana Brody, an up and coming judge in the Superior Court of Massachuse­tts, indulges in a one night affair while at a conference. When she returns to her bench, she is blackmaile­d with videotapes of her actions by the defence in a sex discrimina­tion suit. Now, turning the tables on adversarie­s will require that she be as ruthless as they are.

“No Exit,” by Taylor Adams. Caught in a fierce blizzard in the mountains of Colorado, college student Darby Thorne is horrified to discover a girl locked in an animal cage in the van parked next to her at a rest stop. Which of her fellow travellers is the kidnapper and how can she rescue the child without losing her own life?

“That Churchill Woman,” by Stephanie Barron. This fictionali­zed biography of New Yorker Jennie Jerome, who became

Lady Randolph Churchill, follows her scandal-filled life as she uses her political shrewdness to shape her husband’s career and the future of her son, Winston.

Non-fiction

“The Way of Coyote,” by Gavin Van Horn. In this collection of essays the author considers the diversity of animals that have adapted to urban settings, and uses ecological and philosophi­cal perspectiv­es to explore what it means for humans to co-exist with wildlife.

“Flavors of Africa,” by Evi Aki. Featuring a variety of dishes from across the continent, this cookbook explores the spices, flavours and traditions of Africa with recipes such as Nigerian Red Stew, Plantain Frittata, and Moroccan-Spiced Veggie Couscous.

“Stanley Cup,” by Eric Zweig. This official Hockey Hall of Fame book details the complete history of the Stanley Cup, including stories from the seasons and playoffs, rosters and statistics.

“Chalk,” by Joshua Rivkin. Through extensive research and interviews, and with previously unpublishe­d photograph­s, poet Rivkin explores the life and work of prominent modern artist Cy Twombly in this biography.

“Smash!” by Ian Winwood. Music writer Winwood looks into the resurgence of punk rock in the 1990s, exploring the success of bands such as Green Day, NOFX, Rancid and The Offspring.
