Simple, delicious diner food ‘made with love’ in Niagara-on-the-Lake
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and at Lorenzo’s Diner, it’s one that’s made with love.
“It’s diner food, it’s simple food, but it’s good food. It’s made with passion; it’s made with love,” said owner and chef Lorenzo Lucchetta, who recently opened his diner in the space across from the GM plant on Glendale Avenue in Niagaraon-the-Lake.
The site has housed a number of diners and has been a popular breakfast joint for as long as he could remember, so he said he was keen on maintaining the tradition.
Patrons of the previous restaurants remain loyal to the locale, he said, and they seem to appreciate the changes he’s made — namely the cleanliness, the new menu items and the taste of the food.
“It’s been a great response.” Born and raised in Welland, Lucchetta left a job at a large banquet facility and acquired his first food truck in 2015, after being inspired by the 2014 film
He began with Cucina a GoGo, a truck that paid tribute to his Italian-Canadian upbringing, and quickly expanded to include a second truck, Canadiana a Go-Go.
The Go-Go Food Company hits up events and wineries and caters corporate and private functions, but demand has gradually grown high enough to warrant opening a brick-andmortar establishment, he said.
“The beauty of the diner is that you can come here and get our food-truck food any day of the week with more on top of that, including breakfast.”
Lucchetta had a hard time pinning down just one favourite item on the diner’s menu.
He raved about the fresh, fluffy omelette he’d had just that morning but also praised the lobster eggs benny served on fish cakes with a béarnaise sauce. Then there are the home fries.
“We have the best home fries, bar none.”
The food truck business continues to thrive alongside the diner, and Lucchetta said he’s now searching for a place to set up a breakfast food truck as well.
“Breakfast is important to many, many people … it’s the most important meal of the day.”
