Chamber, city work to elect more female municipal reps
Another Walker in charge at Walker Industries
Getting more women to run for municipal office — and winning a seat on city council — is the goal of a project launched by the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce and the City of St. Catharines.
Called Seat at the Table, it allows local women with an interest in politics to apply to be one of six who will receive six months of mentorship from the three women on St. Catharines city council — Karrie Porter, Lori Littleton and Dawn Dodge.
Women who take part can shadow the politicians and municipal leaders to learn more about how the system works.
Currently in Niagara, of the 123 elected officials, only 34 are female.
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities is also a partner, with a grant from Women and Gender Equality Canada.
Applications close at 4 p.m. on Nov. 15. To learn more or to apply, visit the city website StCatharines.ca/SeatAtTheTable.

Before joining Walker Industries, he worked in marketing consulting and investment banking.
As the new president and chief executive officer there, he succeeds John Fisher, who was with the company for 19 years and will remain with Walker through the end of the year.
