Jr. Canadians edge Meteors in overtime

Phillipe Angervil scored a natural hat trick, including the game-winner 2:53 into the first overtime, and the Welland Jr. Canadians defeated the Fort Erie Meteors, 5-4, for their first victory in nearly a month. Joshua McVeigh and Thomas Gualtieri opened the scoring for the visitors in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League Golden Horseshoe Conference action Saturday night at Fort Erie Leisureple­x.

Veaceslav Pinin, with a pair, Anthony Gigliotti and Adam Morgan netted goals for the Meteors, who lost their sixth in a row.

Shots on net were 39-39. Welland went 2-for-6 on the power play. Fort Erie was 1for-4 with a man advantage.

The Jr. Canadians’ first win since Oct. 11 improved their record to 4-14-2, one point back of the Buffalo Regals (4-14-2-1) and two ahead of the Meteors (2-14-0-4.)

Welland was back on the ice Sunday night hosting the St. Catharines Falcons (13-6-1). Other games on the Golden Horseshoe schedule Sunday included Buffalo at Pelham Panthers (6-11-0-2) and Hamilton Kilty B’s (12-6-2) at Caledonia Corvairs (18-1-0-1).

Fort Erie visits Hamilton Monday night.

Falcons 7, Panthers 0

At St. Catharines, Ethan Cook stopped 20 shots for the second shutout of his junior B career, and the Falcons improved to 2-0 in their season series versus Pelham.

Curtis Egert and one-time Niagara RiverHawk Nick Volpatti scored two goals each as the hosts won their second in a row.

Dylan Abbamont, with his first junior B goal, Michael

Angrilli and Kylar Watson also found the back of the net Friday night at Jack Gatecliff Arena.

Shots on net were 38-20 in favour of the Falcons, who finished the game 3-for-4 with a man advantage and held the Panthers scoreless on four power-play opportunit­ies.

Pelham, which opened league play versus St. Catharines with a 7-2 loss at home, was shut out for the seventh time.

Canucks 4, Blackhawks 1

At Niagara Falls, Andrew Bruno and Ryan Donovan each scored a goal and collected an assist in helping the hosts even the season series with Thorold at one win apiece.

Brodie Thoms and Cody Wall also scored for the Canucks, who jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the way to their third win in a row. Ben Varga replied for the Blackhawks who lost for the second time in as many nights.

Thorold outshot Niagara Falls 41-37, and neither team scored on the power play: the Blackhawks went 0-for-2 and the Canucks finished 0-for-2.

Only two penalties, both against Niagara Falls, were called Friday at Gale Centre.

The Blackhawks doubled the Canucks, 4-2, on Sept. 26 in Thorold.

RiverHawks 3, Mudcats 2

At Dunnville, Nick Duguid scored two goals and Ian Rush one, leading visiting Niagara to its second win in as many nights in the junior C Provincial Junior Hockey League.

Noah Bourdon, while shorthande­d, and Jack MacDonald replied for the Mudcats (5-12).

Shots on net were 38-34 in favour of the RiverHawks (5-100-2).

Niagara went 0-for-5 on the power play, while Dunnville finished off 0-for-7.

Sailors 5, Peach Kings 3

At Grimsby, Port Dover scored three power-play goals and allowed only one as the hosts lost for the second time in four games after starting junior C league play 13-0. Jacob Balca, Matt Shouppe and Addison De Tullio scored for the Peach Kings (15-2).

The Sailors snapped a fivegame winless streak to improve to 5-12-2-1.

Port Dover outshot Grimsby 36-27 and finished Friday night’s game 3-for-7 with a man advantage. The Peach Kings went 1-for-7 on the power play.
