Falcons continue to soar

St. Catharines seeks to extend its winning streak to five games and its point streak to seven games

- BERND FRANKE REGIONAL SPORTS EDITOR

With four victories in a row — and counting — the St. Catharines Falcons now have the longest winning streak in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Golden Horseshoe Conference.

They have gone undefeated in seven games, also tops in the conference, if you throw a 3-3 tie in double-overtime against the Welland Jr. Canadians into the mix.

Their last loss was a 6-5 setback at home to the Niagara Falls Canucks on Oct. 29, which also is the last time the junior B team failed to earn at least a point.

St. Catharines, second in the nine-team conference, is back on the ice Friday, hoping the momentum from a big win over the first-place Caledonia Corvairs will help carry them past visiting Welland.

In their last game, the Falcons doubled the Corvairs, 2-1, becoming the first team in the conference to defeat Caledonia in regulation. St. Catharines improved to 1-2 in head-tohead play versus the Corvairs despite being outshot 32-19.

Caledonia rebounded with two wins after failing to earn at least a point for the first time since opening the regular season with a

2-1 loss to the Listowel Cyclones of the Midwestern Conference at the showcase tournament in Pelham.

After a 5-2 defeat of the Fort Erie Meteors at home Sunday, the Corvairs edged the Kilty B’s, 2-1, the following night in Hamilton.

Ryan Wells, on the power play, and Nick Hugh, 18:11 into the third period, scored for Caledonia, which outshot Hamilton 38-23, went 1-for-6 on the power play and held the B’s scoreless on seven man-advantage opportunities. Terry Brigland scored for Hamilton at the 1:01 mark of the first period.
