Mosaic project to showcase Welland Public Library

Six hundred canvas tiles to be painted

-

A mosaic made up of 600 canvas tiles will represent Welland Public Library’s past, present and future as it begins to celebrate its 100th anniversary this year.

In a release, the library said an artists group from Edmonton called Mural Mosaics will design the mural with each of the 600 tiles holding a unique image.

The mosaic was made possible by the Ontario Seniors Community Grant Program.

When complete, it will form a single image on an 2.5-metre-by-3.5-metre mural to hang in the main branch, 60 The Boardwalk.

Because the mural will also represent the community, the library will reach out to Rose City residents and organizations to lend a hand with the painting.

“This collaborative art project provides a unique way to connect and have a little fun — even from a distance,” said the release, adding all painting will take place in February.

“It’s also a great opportunity for residents of all ages to work together and share their stories, whether virtually, by phone or in person for those who live in the same household.”

Art kits — they include all required materials and simple instructions — will be provided free-of-charge to people who are interested.

“No artistic experience is needed. In February, the library will host optional instructional online workshops for people who would like to paint as a group.”

Dates for the online workshops will be announced, as will contactless pickup or delivery times for the tiles.

The library said the tiles are limited to one per person while supplies last.
