A new high school being built in Beamsville has taken its next important step.

As part of the province’s ongoing efforts to build and improve local schools, the Ontario government has given District School Board of Niagara approval to award the tender for West Niagara Secondary School.

The $50.4-million investment will serve students in Lincoln, Grimsby and West Lincoln.

“The funding for this new school is great news for our community,” Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West and parliamentary assistant to the minister of education, said last Thursday.

“The community and educational services in this new project will provide students with a modern and supportive learning environment,” he added in a news release.

“After a decade of school closures in rural Ontario, our government knows families in west Niagara deserve modern and accessible classrooms,” said Education Minister Stephen Lecce, who was in the region Thursday for the announcement.

The building will house more than 1,500 students with stateof-the-art classrooms, a modern theatre, and greenhouse with indoor and outdoor classrooms to support pathways and learning in the skilled trades, said Lecce.

The new secondary school supports consolidation of Beamsville District Secondary School, Grimsby Secondary School and South Lincoln High School.

“With a strong combination of advanced equipment, technology and facilities, a broad range of course offerings as well as community partnerships, West Niagara Secondary School will give students the tools and opportunities they need to find success in their futures,” said DSBN chair Sue Barnett, in the release.

Niagara West Secondary School will be at 5699 King St. in Beamsville.
