Cirque du Soleil skates back to Meridian Centre this summer
Company’s delayed 2020 show ‘Crystal’ booked for eight performances
After four years, the “cirque” is coming back to Meridian Centre.
Cirque du Soleil will bring its acrobatic show on ice “Crystal” to the St. Catharines arena this summer for eight performances June 30 to July 3. It will be the show’s only Canadian stop for its North American tour.
The show was originally slated for Meridian Centre in May 2020 but was cancelled because of the pandemic.
“Having Cirque take over the Meridian Centre for eight performances is a home run for Niagara and a testament to the fans in our city,” said centre spokesperson Kay Meilleur.
“This show was close to a sellout, with Cirque having to add an additional performance, the last time around and we believe it was one of the reasons they chose us this time for the only Canadian show of this North American tour.”
It marks the second Cirque du Soleil production to come to Meridian Centre, following “Corteo” in 2018.
Created by Shana Carroll and Sebastien Soldevila, “Crystal” is the company’s first show on ice. It mixes figure, freestyle and extreme skating to convey the heroine’s imagination through a frozen playground. It utilizes 43 performers and more than 50 crew members and is the Montreal-based company’s 42nd production since it formed in 1984.
“We are absolutely thrilled to finally bring ‘Crystal’ back on the road,” said the company’s touring shows senior vice-president, Mike Newquist.
“For two years our performers have been waiting to skate again and experience the joy of the live audience once more.”
Performances will be June 30 at 7:30 p.m.; July 1 at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.; July 2 at 11:30 a.m., 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and July 3 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Tickets are on sale at www.cirquedusoleil.com.
There are Canada Day performances at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.
