Five puppies left in a box by the side of the road in Niagara Falls will be looking for new homes soon.

The black poodles — one male, four female — were brought to Niagara Falls SPCA and Humane Society on Feb. 21 by someone who spotted them in a box near the corner of Montrose and Schisler roads.

In the box was a sticker which read “DOB (date of birth) — Jan. 6.”

“It’s very disheartening and disappointing to hear that animals are left at the side of the road,” said Tyler Greer, supervisor of community engagement for Niagara SPCA.

Greer said the puppies were in “pretty good condition” when they arrived.”

“We’ve had our medical team look over them.”

In addition to receiving food and warm shelter, they’ve been vaccinated and dewormed.

Greer is dismayed the person who abandoned the puppies didn’t simply bring them to the SPCA.

“We don’t judge or discriminate against any individual that has to surrender an animal because we don’t know what their current situation is or what they’re feeling at that moment,” he said. “We try to work with the individuals in order to get the animals and then find them a forever home.”

The playful pups are “very friendly and in high spirits,” he added.

“They’re very affectionate and social puppy poodles.”

The five pups should be available for adoption by the end of the week.

“We just want to make sure they’ve gone through all our staff protocols,” said Greer. “Make sure they’re in a healthy state (for) their forever home and match them with the right individual that applies and adopts.”
