Wrestlers hope to capitalize in Ottawa

Niagara student-athletes hope to pin down medals at provincial meet

For the next three days, studentath­letes from 12 high schools in the Niagara region will be in Ottawa hoping to pin down medals at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associatio­ns (OFSAA) Wrestling Championsh­ip.

Weigh-ins are Monday afternoon at TD Place Arena with the first bouts in boys and girls divisions getting underway the following morning, also at the home of the Ontario Hockey League’s Ottawa 67’s.

The top finishers in their respective weights at the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Associatio­n (SOSSA) qualifier at Blessed Trinity Catholic Secondary School in Grimsby advanced to provincial­s.

Eden High School in St. Catharines is sending four entries, including Zubin Gatta, the 2020 OFSAA gold medallist in the boys 38kilogram weight class who this week will be competing in the 57.5kg class.

Gatta won a bronze medal in the 52-kg division at the Canada Summer Games last year in St. Catharines.

Following are how wrestlers from the region fared at the SOSSA championsh­ips in Grimsby. The top two qualify for provincial­s:
