CHARLAND, Kathleen (Kay) Dorothy (nee Smith)

Our Kathleen mother (Kay) and matriarch, Charland passed away peacefully on May 23, 2023 at the incredible age of 101. She was born July 17, 1921 and raised in Niagara Falls to parents Albert and Agnes (Crowe) Smith. Predecease­d by a sister Phyllis Boone (Geoffrey), and brother Thomas (Leala) Smith. Mom married our Dad, Armand (deceased Dec. 25, 1998), and after their honeymoon, Dad being enlisted in the army, went overseas to fight in WWII. Mom stayed home, worked, and lived with Dad's mom while he fought for the freedom we have today. After Dad returned, they began raising our family. Patricia Ann Snow (deceased Jan. 22, 2011) Joan Yvonne Durdan Fitzpatric­k (Dan), Chatham, Julia Marie Mein (John), Anne Frances Stewardson (Mike), Sarnia, David John Charland. Mom was a stay-at-home mom, always taking care of us. Baking cookies, preserving fruits, making raspberry jam, always busy in the kitchen. She spent the last 12 years of her life at Chippawa Creek Bella Residence where she was well taken care of; the family is forever grateful for the care and love she received there. Mom was a loving Grandmothe­r to 10 amazing grandchild­ren: Laura (Snow) Kennedy (Evan Croker), Bill Snow (Lee-ann); Rob Durdan (Lisa); Jeffrey Mein (Beth), Peter Mein (Kim), Ross Mein (Kristie); Kyle Stewardson (Jill), Rachel Boock (Craig); Daniel and Erica Charland. Great Grandmothe­r to 14. She will be lovingly missed by several nieces and nephews, too numerous to mention. She was a life time member of the Catholic Women's League of Canada at Our Lady of Scapular Church and Sacred Heart Parish. Cremation has taken place. Friends are invited to join the family at the PATTERSON FUNERAL HOME, 6062 Main St. Niagara Falls, visiting Wednesday, May 31, 2023 from 2 to 4 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations can be made to Sacred Heart Church, Project Share or Diabetes Canada and would be appreciate­d.
