Students from the Huntington University Gerontology Society (HUGS) have collected 85 gifts for long-term care residents in Greater Sudbury. The packages, donated as part of Huntington University’s 4th annual Christmas Giving Tree campaign, will be presented to long-term care residents at Finlandia Village, Pioneer Manor, Extendicare-York, and the Elizabeth Centre, on Christmas Day. “This campaign is a prime example of how lessons move beyond the classroom to have a greater impact in the community at large, and I commend the students from HUGS for their ongoing commitment, year over year, to this community project,” Lorraine Mercer, chair of the Huntington University Gerontology Department, said in a release. “Since 2015, the Giving Tree initiative has collected nearly 200 gifts for local long-term care residents. We’re excited to add to that tally this year, and also expand the initiative to include one more home, the Elizabeth Centre,” said Bethany Robinson, HUGS president. “I’d like to thank our campus community and the local Greater Sudbury residents who continue to support this campaign. As a group of gerontology students, it brings us great joy to know we’re doing something positive for older adults in Greater Sudbury.”
