Following Jesus is the best thing you could do

When you put your faith in Jesus, not only are you saved eternally, but also you get a more full and abundant quality of life here

- REV. MARK SMITH Mark Smith is the Senior Pastor of Lansing Avenue Baptist Chapel in New Sudbury.

In The Gospel of John, chapter 10, Jesus describes Himself as the good shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep to give them eternal life and who will take His life back up again. And that is exactly what Jesus did: He died on the cross to pay for our sins and then rose again three days later.

One of the many great verses in John, chapter 10, is verse 10, where Jesus says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

Or as some Bible translations will say, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

Do you know Jesus as your Good Shepherd and as your Saviour and as the One who has given you both eternal life and abundant life?

The most famous verse in the Bible is John 3:1,6 which says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Jesus died on the cross to pay for the sins of all who will put their faith and belief in Him. Have you put your faith in Jesus? As Acts 16:31 says, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.”

And when you put your faith in Jesus, not only do you get saved eternally but, also, you get a more full and abundant quality of life here and now in this life. Not that your life becomes perfect – we all will go through many ups and downs, good times, and hard trials and difficulties.

But when you know Jesus, He is with you through it all and it takes a bit of the edge off the hard times (though they are still hard) and it makes the good times even better.

Jesus doesn't want to steal your joy or kill or destroy you – He wants to give you abundant life, life to the full. When you know and follow Jesus, you are living life in line with the way you were created and you get a deeper joy and pleasure out of life than when you are living against God and against the way He created you to live.

Pleasures apart from God are still pleasures – but they are short-lived compared to the deep, meaningful, and lasting pleasure that comes from knowing Jesus.

As the old song called Knowing Jesus says, “Knowing You, Jesus, knowing You, there is no greater thing. You're my all, You're the best, You're my joy, my righteousness, and I love You Lord.”

Jesus is the best, and believing in Jesus and knowing Jesus and following Jesus is the best possible thing you could do for yourself both in this life and for the sake of your eternity.
