RUGBY

The Owen Sound District Wolves varsity girls snatched the Bluewater Athletic Association championship from the St. Mary’s Mustangs with a decisive 41-0 win in the gold medal game on Monday at OSDSS.

The Mustangs came into the game as three-time defending BAA champions, but the Wolves stood defiant and shutout their crosstown rival ending their quest for a fourth-straight title.

“There was that point of pride, you know, enough is enough,” said OSDSS head coach Rob Lee in an interview on Wednesday. “The girls were focused with their goal setting at the beginning of the year, and that was one of their goals - to go out there and take it.”

The win capped a dominant season in the BAA North Division for the Wolves. Owen Sound only gave up two tries in the regular season, both to St. Mary’s in a 41-10 victory earlier in the season.

OSDSS shutout the secondseed Kincardine District Knights from the South Division, 29-0, in the BAA semifinal to earn a berth into the final.

Heather Oosterhoff scored two tries and made two conversions in the semifinal victory. Kenna McKee added a pair of tries and Gabby McNabb crossed the touch-line for the Wolves.

In the other semifinal, the Mustangs narrowly beat the South Division’s top-ranked Sacred Heart Crusaders, 29-22. It was the Crusaders first loss on the season as they trampled the rest of the South scoring a league-high 139 points while not allowing a single try during the season.

“I think we’ve had a great rivalry with them in the last few years,” said Lee. “We spent two years feeling like we left something on the table.”

Lee and the West Hill Raiders lost, 10-7, to the Mustangs in the 2016 BAA final.

Redemption rode in on the back of McNabb who scored two more tries in the final game. Tia Quesnel, Oosterhoff, McKee, Jamey Cunningham and Rachel Woods added tries for the Wolves and Oosterhoff made three conversions.

Lee said shutting out the Mustangs in the final added a little extra something in the victory. The Wolves weren’t happy with giving up two tries to their foe in game two of their regular season. They wanted to win and leave no doubt.

“We’ve been getting better and better,” said Lee. “We were going to play hard and not feel like we have any regrets.”

The Wolves will now host the CWOSSA AAA tournament at OSDSS starting with pool play on May 25, and finishing with the final on May 27.

The BAA senior boys rugby championship tournament is scheduled for Tuesday. The match-ups will be set on Friday following the last regular season game between Kincardine and Sacred Heart.
