Mustangs quiet Thunder 33-22

The Sun Times (Owen Sound) - - SPORTS - SUN TIMES STAFF

It was a good run, but the winless Georgian Bay Thunder lost 33-22 to the St. Mary’s Mustangs in Bluewater Athletic Association senior girls basketball action on Thursday afternoon.

The defeat results in the Thunder’s record falling to 0-4 on the year while the Mustangs improve to 3-1 - their only loss coming at the hands of the undefeated Owen Sound District Wolves in the season opener.

The Mustangs travelled east on Thursday to the Georgian Bay Community School in Meaford and jumped out to an early lead. A three-point bucket by the Thunder in the first quarter signalled the home team wasn’t going away quietly.

Earlier in the week the Mustangs limited the Peninsula Shores Phoenix to only four points, and held the Thunder to their lowest total of the season on Thursday.

The Thunder and Mustangs will go head-to-head again in Owen Sound on October 30.

Elsewhere in the senior girls basketball circuit the 4-0 Wolves stayed hot against the Grey Highlands Lions (1-2) with a 39-28 victory on Wednesday.

In the South Division, the Kincardine Knights (3-1) and Walkerton Riverhawks (3-1) both picked up wins. The Knights beat the Sacred Heart Crusaders 29-11 and the Riverhawks topped the Saugeen Royals 37-22.

Both teams bounced back after recording their first defeats of the season a week prior.

The Riverhawks are the BAA’s top offensive team. They’ve scored 162 points in four games.

OSDSS is the best squad at keeping the basketball out of the bucket. The Wolves have held teams to only 70 points so far across four games this season.

The Wolves can run up the score too, they’ve scored 151 points over four contests.

The Riverhawks and Wolves are mid-season division leaders.

Next week’s premier match-up pits the ‘Stangs and Wolves against each other for the first time since the North Division’s top teams met in their openers. The Wolves came out on top 33-14.

Tia Quesnel led all scorers in that conest with 13 points for the Wolves while Katie Papke answered with six for St. Mary’s.

Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m., on Tuesday inside the OSDSS gym.
