Easton Hartley takes the handoff and drives up the middle in the second quarter as Owen Sound District Secondary School beat the Saugeen Royals 13-0 at OSDSS on Friday afternoon.

The Owen Sound District Wolves defence continued to bare its teeth on Friday with a 13-0 shutout over the Saugeen Royals in Owen Sound.

It was the second shutout for the Wolves in as many regular season games.

The two teams played to a 15-15 draw earlier in the season, but the Wolves defensive line featuring standouts Matt Kool and Kyle Brown made sure to ground the Royals air attack on a chilly afternoon.

The weather may have helped as well. The cold and sometimes rainy mess lent itself to Lucas Wright’s brand of ground-and-pound football.

The Wolves’ running back drove his way down the football field shedding Royals tackles en route to the game’s first score of the day.

When the Royals clogged up the middle of the field, quarterback Ethin Derry attacked the outside for positive yardage - including a big gain on third-and-short to keep the opening drive alive.

Noah Dyal converted for the extra point to give OSDSS the 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Wolves defence then forced back-to-back three-and-outs from the Royals before Saugeen blocked a field goal attempt to keep the score close.

The Royals shut down the Wolves on the goal line to force a turnover on downs after Owen Sound recovered a fumble in the Saugeen end.

Owen Sound hit pay-dirt again before the end of the half when Ethin Derry connected with Calvin Stewart at the back of the end zone. A bobbled snap flubbed the conversion. The score 13-0 at half-time.

In the second half the Royals found a little success on offence with back-to-back connections between quarterback Nick Scott and wide receiver Flynn Colwell-Castles.

The drive fizzled out when Wolves linebacker Jason Rudolph stuffed a run for a loss.

Owen Sound’s defence dominated the rest of the way securing the shutout and improving the Wolves record to 2-1-1 (W-LT). The Royals fall to 1-2-1 on the year.

The St. Mary’s Mustangs improved to 4-0-0 with a 35-3 win over the Grey Highlands Lions on the road this week.

Owen Sound and St. Mary’s will battle at the OSDSS field on Thursday with kick-off scheduled for 3 p.m.
