‘Stangs top Wolves in OT

The Sun Times (Owen Sound) - - SPORTS - GREG COWAN

Two teams entered the St. Mary’s High School gym undefeated, and the Mustangs kept it that way with a 39-38 victory over the Owen Sound District Wolves on Thursday afternoon.

The Wolves were handed their only blemish on an otherwise sparking 3-1 record early in the Bluewater Athletic Association senior boys basketball season. The Mustangs improved to 3-0. Surely Cedric McNay’s boss will understand.

Shortly after the Mustangs guard hit a game-tying free throw to help send the contest into overtime, he asked for a phone to call work and tell them he’ll be late.

Minutes later McNay was one of the handful of Mustangs players who denied a last-second lay-up attempt and sealed the victory.

Fouls played a big part in Thursday’s game between the two Owen Sound schools.

The Wolves leading scorer and floor leader, Audon Courtney, fouled out halfway through the overtime frame.

With the Wolves leading in OT, Lee Stephens scored on an in-bound play before stealing the ball and drawing a foul. He knocked down the foul shots to put the ‘Stangs ahead for the final time in a seesaw game.

The Mustangs looked primed for a blowout early. Dominating on the glass, and sparked by a late Stephens’ three-ball, the Mustangs took a 17-9 lead into the second quarter.

The Wolves seemed thrown off by the ‘Stangs zone defence that collapsed on the ball hard. Audon Courtney managed to drain four tough points in the lane for ODSSS, but nothing came easy.

In the second quarter the Wolves started to swing the ball, and success followed, OSDSS went on an 8-0 run. The Wolves took their first lead of the game on a three-point bucket from Ethan Courtney before the end of the first half.

The third quarter did little to create any separation between the two teams. The two guards went back and forth with buckets. Isaiah Smith notched six points for the Wolves in the frame while Stephens and Jacob French answered back for St. Mary’s.

The score was tied 27-27 headed into the final regulation quarter.

Zach Meikle made a statement with an opening three-point shot for the ‘Stangs before Ethan Courtney answered back with a Wolves layup. Neither team could pull away.

The Wolves carved out 35-32 lead before Stephens drove for a layup, and then stole the ball sending McNay ahead to be fouled on the fast break.

McNay hit one of two shots to send the game to overtime.

The St. Mary’s Mustangs will next host the Peninsula Shores Phoenix on Tuesday inside the St. Mary’s gym while the Wolves take on Bruce Peninsula the same day across town at OSDSS.
