Mineral oil leak captured
A transformer failure at the Bruce Power site resulted in the release of mineral oil on Thursday, but there is no indication any of it made it to Lake Huron.
The failure occurred outside the Unit 8 building at the Bruce B generating station. The unit was offline for planned maintenance, Bruce Power said in a news release.
There is a collection system in place to capture mineral oil under such circumstances and Bruce Power has confirmed that all the mineral oil has been captured and monitoring is ongoing, the news release said.
Bruce Power spokesperson John Peevers said via e-mail that it is difficult to quantify the amount of oil that was released, but there is absorbent material around the transformer that is designed to collect the oil, which is used for cooling and insulating the transformer.
Bruce Power’s response teams and fire suppression systems responded to the incident and the situation is contained, the news release said.
One employee was treated for heat stress and is resting at home, accordign to the company.
The appropriate agencies have been notified as well, the news release said.
