Arts for Youth con­cert planned for Mark­dale Jan. 19

Once again it is time for the AFY (Arts For Youth) Win­ter Con­cert. Per­form­ing in this the 12th an­nual con­cert will be MAFY (Mark­dale Arts for Youth), TAAFY (To­tally Awe­some Arts for Youth) and OCAFY (Os­prey Com­mu­nity Arts for Youth). They will be joined by The Os­prey Rock Choir and the Beaver­crest Choir. These grades 5 to 8 stu­dents from the Hol­land Chatsworth, Os­prey-Maxwell, and Mark­dale ar­eas along with sev­eral MAFY alumni have been work­ing hard at their weekly prac­tices to pre­pare. More than 80 mu­si­cians will en­ter­tain the au­di­ence with so­los, duets, quar­tets and con­cert band per­for­mances. The con­cert takes place Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. at An­nes­ley United Church in Mark­dale. Freewill do­na­tion.

Trib­ute band Chicken Fried presents an au­then­tic ver­sion of the Zac Brown Band at Meaford Hall Saturday at 8 p.m. Fea­tur­ing the vo­cals of El­ton Lam­mie the band per­forms all the hits of ZBB that have ap­peared on the ra­dio and some of their songs re­served only for live shows. Fran Bouw­man brings her Franny Wisp & Her Wash­board show to Heart­wood Con­cert Hall Saturday. It is a unique, quirky and some­times self-dep­re­cat­ing re­sponse to a so­ci­ety that is pre­oc­cu­pied with youth, beauty, suc­cess and ro­man­tic re­la­tion­ships. Owen Sound Lit­tle The­atre presents Short­handed by Michael Grant Jan. 31-Feb.2 and Feb. 6-9 at 7:30 p.m. Di­rected by Shirley Holmes, this pro­duc­tion is part of the Sea­son of Com­edy. It’s Game 7 of the cham­pi­onship fi­nals and the lo­cal Old Timers’ hockey team is look­ing for re­demp­tion. Cursed by a leg­endary Game 7 loss suf­fered years ago as Ju­nior B play­ers, the Old Timers’ home town hasn’t won a ti­tle since. But just how much can the play­ers take for the team? Jamie Smith (vo­cals) and the Don Buchanan Trio per­form at Heart­wood Con­cert Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. Don (pi­ano, sax); Paul Da­nard (bass) and Steve Wood (drums) will cre­ate the vibe for this up-close per­for­mance of jazz stan­dards, show tunes and Scot­tish love bal­lads mas­ter­fully sung by Jamie Smith. Cel­e­brate Valen­tine’s Eve with two sets of love. And there will be choco­late! A por­tion of the pro­ceeds will go to Chap­man House. The Ge­or­gian Bay Sym­phony presents A Con­cert for the Young at Heart on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. This con­cert is for mu­sic lovers of all ages. Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf is a time­less fairy tale. Ben­jamin Brit­tens Young Per­sons Guide to the Or­ches­tra is the per­fect in­tro­duc­tion to the or­ches­tra and re­fresher course for afi­ciona­dos.
