Big turnout for Filipino celebration

- The Hectic Pace returns next Wednesday.

More

than 300 members and friends of the Filipino Association (many from Gander) turned out for an annual celebration at the Bella Vista Club in St. John’s on Saturday night. Many wore the traditional costumes of the country; entertainment included songs and dances performed by young and old alike.

Happy birthday, Oreo

Fans of Oreos celebrated 100 March 6.

According to their Facebook site, “over 490 million Oreos have been sold in the cookie’s first 100 years, making them far and away the best-selling cookie of the 20th century and an indelible part of American culture. Many people cite the fun of the act of eating an Oreo as a big part of its appeal, with some people eating the sandwiches whole, some pulling them apart, and many dipping them in milk.”

According to Kraft, an estimated 50 per cent of Oreo eaters pull the cookies apart, and women are more likely to do so than men.

Note: Some things do change. Concerns over nutrition have had an effect on the cookie. The crème filling (originally made with lard) is now manufactured using non-hydrogenated vegetable oil.

Well-worn trail

from years around the world of the cookies on The East Coast Trail is a pedestrian hiking trail that runs along the coast of the eastern Avalon from Topsail Beach to Trepassey, and inland across the Avalon from Ferryland to Placentia.

The association is a volunteer based, notfor-profit, registered charity whose mission is to develop, maintain and preserve the East Coast Trail while respecting the integrity of the natural environment, respecting the needs of communities, and delivering a high quality wilderness hiking experience.

Wise advice

A woman who recently lost both parents shared some sage advice: prepare and plan. Among her tips: have a properly witnessed will, write your own obituary and your burial wishes, and list all your major assets (and to whom they should go).
