resident of Labrador West celebrated the release of his new album last week.

Ron Harvey, who currently lives in Witless Bay, spent over 30 years of his life in Wabush, where his music career began.

Harvey’s album, “Looking Back,” is about his early days growing up in Newfoundland in a fishing community.

It also features popular songs released on previous albums now out of print, such as, “Spring in the Cove,” and “The Mountain is Gone.”

Harvey was involved with two previous bands, including Labrador Black Spruce, which had two studio albums and a few live albums, and Iron City Ramblers. He also has a previous solo album called, “What I See.”

Harvey said he didn’t know where he would be if it wasn’t for his time in Labrador West.

Lab West was good to me. That’s where I wrote

my first song.

“Lab West was good to me. That’s where I wrote my first song. I met a lot of great people there, who were very supportive of what I was doing.”

In the 1980s, the mayor of Wabush asked Harvey to write a song for the 25th anniversary of the town, which he called, “Tribute to Wabush.”

He co-wrote his latest album with his wife, Sheilagh, who also designed the album art. His daughter, Derina Harvey Pinsent, recorded, engineered, produced and edited the album at her recording studio in Edmonton, Alta.

“It’s been a real family project, which is just great,” he said.
