Provincial teams avoid finishing in last place at nationals

Both the province’s teams at the under-15 and under-17 girls’ national basketball championship finished in ninth place following wins over Prince Edward Island on Friday.

In under-17 play, Sydney Ezekiel took the Newfoundland and Labrador on her back with a 25-point, ninerebound effort in a 67-55 win. Maria Carroll chipped in with 17. In under-15, Geanna George had 16 points to lead the province to a 7841 victory.

Kelsey Moore and Kayla Thompson added 12 apiece, with the latter adding 8 rebounds.
