Newfoundlanders abound at ISC championship tourney in Michigan

Eleven Newfoundlanders, most of them from the Molson St. John’s senior league, are competing on various club teams at this week’s International Softball Congress World Tournament in Midland, Mich.

Outfielders Jason Hill (St. John’s) and Stephen Mullaley (Freshwater, Placentia), along Ezekiel brothers Brad (Harbour Main) and Kyle (Holyrood) are with the Six Nations, Ont., Hill United Chiefs. The team were scheduled to play its first game late Sunday evening Newfoundland time.

Blair Ezekiel (Harbour Main) is suiting up with the New York Gremlins from Clifton Park, N.Y. In the Gremlins’ first game, a 10-0 win over Argentina’s national junior squad, Ezekiel was hitless in three trips to the plate, striking out twice.

Sean Cleary (Harbour Main), and the Boland brothers, Shane and Ryan (Goulds,) have signed on with the Jarvis, Ont., Travelers for the ISC worlds. In their first game, a 9-0 win over the Huron, Mich., Wellness/Gillies, Cleary pitched five innings of twohit shutout baseball with nine strikeouts. Ryan Boland was hitless in four trips to the plate while his brother Shane is set to join the team later in the week following his appear at the national junior softball championships in Owen Sound, Ont.

Veteran pitcher and St. John’s circuit all-time home run leader Ward Gosse (Torbay) is playing with the Parry Island, Ont., Hawks who lost their first game Sunday to the Muscoutah, Ill., Pete's Blues. In the 2-0 loss, Gosse was 0-3 with a strikeout and two ground outs. On the mound, Gosse two innings of relief giving up one run on one hit while fanning four.

Sean Whitten (Petty Harbour), pitched four innings of one-hit baseball with nine strikeouts as the California A’s from Eugene Oregon downed the Big Apple, N.Y., Bagels 4-2.

Results from Justin Gill’s (Colliers) first game with the Minnesota Angels against the Shakespeare, Ont., Falcons Sunday night were not available prior to the Telegram’s press deadline.
