St. John’s teams take U18 crowns

St. John’s teams will represent the province at both national under-18 soccer championsh­ips in Sydney, N.S., after copping Pepsi Cola provincial titles at home this past weekend.

At the Topsail Turf Pitch Sunday, Sean Kavanagh scored twice as St. John’s downed the host Conception Bay South squad 4-0 in the championsh­ip game of the boys’ under-18 tourney. Tareq Albater and Carter Mackey also scored for St. John’s, with Alex David replying for C.B.S.

Members of the St. John’s champions include Dawson Cole, Benjamin Collingwoo­d, Alec DarbyKeats, Michael DeLong, Justin Drover, Errol Rex Elli, Ean Finch, Bobby Gamba, Claude Howard, Kavanagh, Mackey, Joel Maillett, Carter McCormack, Eoin Millan, Lukas Nakonieczn­y, Alex Pretty, Jacob Westcott, Albader, Zachary Santuccion­e, Shane Morris, coach Steve Howell, assistant coach Donald Mackey and manager Chris Finch.

In girls’ under-18 play, after taking Game 1 2-0, St. John’s defeated Mount Pearl 4-0 in Game 2 Saturday to take the best-of-three series 2-0.

Jane Pope, Claire Skanes, Alyssa Armstrong and Jesse Noseworthy had the St. John’s goals. Pope and Julie Crocker had the goals in a series opener. Laura Whelan and Jaime Clarke play goals for the champions.

Noseworthy was named St. John’s most spirited player while Courtney Sharon got the nod for Mount Pearl. Armstrong was MVP for St. John’s, Emily Wells took the honour for Mount Pearl.
