Accused downtown stabber sent back to hospital
Must undergo further psychiatric evaluation
Aman
accused of stabbing another man in the neck at a downtown St. John’s park Friday will undergo further psychiatric evaluation.
James William Rogers, 35, was back in provincial court in St. John’s Monday morning.
After a weekend stay in the Waterford Hospital, doctors have recommended he undergo a further sevenday psychiatric assessment.
Duty counsel Jane Fitzpatrick and Crown prosecutor William Cadigan agreed to have the case return to court Aug. 20.
Rogers is charged with aggravated assault, possessing a weapon (a knife), breach of probation and two counts of breaching an undertaking.
One of the conditions of the undertaking was that he be prohibited from having weapons. That condition was laid after he was charged with holding up Moo Moo’s ice cream shop in St. John’s in April.
The latest charges were laid following an incident around 3 p.m. Friday, near Harbourside Park, which saw a 30-year-old man rushed to hospital with serious injuries. Witnesses said he was bleeding profusely.
The RNC said it appears the suspect and the victim did not know each other and the stabbing was a random act.
According to witnesses, Rogers was pinned against a barbwire fence on Harbour Drive, across from Atlantic Place, as he was arrested and cuffed.
