It is with great sadness and heart breaking sorrow that the family of Gerard Joseph Cahill announce his passing on February 9th, 2013 at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s surrounded by his family. Gerard was born in St. John’s on March 7th, 1922 to Minnie and Frederick Cahill. He grew upon Parade Street, attended St. Bonaventur­e’s College and acquired his masters electricia­n certificat­e in 1947. He left Newfoundla­nd shortly thereafter and worked for five years on the American Base in Greenland before returning home t o found G. J. Cahill and Company as an electrical contractin­g firm in 1953. He married Nora (Fox) of Queens Road in 1955 and had three children: Fred, Moya and Nora. Gerard loved his family and particular­ly relished his times with them on the Moya C. traveling the waters of Conception Bay, Trinity, Bonavista and Notre Dame Bay. An avid sports fisherman, he spent many summers trawling the waters of Conception Bay for the bluefin tuna. He was Past Commodore of t he Royal Newfoundla­nd Yacht Club. He will be remembered by all of us for his leadership, perseveran­ce, and generosity and particular­ly for his pride in his children and love of his family. Gerard is survived by his loving children, daughters: Moya ( Paul Gaudet) and Nora (Pierre Gauvreau); son Fred ( Doreen Power); and his grandchild­ren, whom he loved dearly and t ook great j oy f rom: Jennifer Marie, David, Marah, Nicholas, Zachery, Mia and Simon Peter. Gerard was preceded in death by his wife Nora (Fox), his parents: Frederick Joseph and Minnie (O’Leary); his brother Father Fred; and his sisters: Joan, Francis (Berrigan) and Eleanor (Flynn). Many thanks to the dedicated and compassion­ate staff of 4 North A and Doctors Murray and Corbett at the Health Sciences Centre and t he s t af f at Tiffany Village. Particular thanks to his long time physician Dr. Fred Jardine. Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Monday, February 11th from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday, February 12th f rom 2- 4 p. m. and 7- 9 p. m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Pius X Parish on Smithville Crescent at 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2013. I nter ment will f ollow at t he Belvedere Cemetery in St. John’s.
