Breakers edge Celtics in playoff opener

The sixth-place Southern Shore C&W Offshore Breakers upset the third-seeded BK Services Celtics 3-1 in Game 1 of their Kent St. John’s Junior Hockey League quarter-final playoff series Wednesday night at Jack Byrne Arena.

Manise Kendell, Brandon Baird and Dylan Joy, into an empty net with 33 seconds to play, had the goals for the Breakers.

Tyler Parsons notched a shorthande­d goal for Celtics who trailed 1-0 after the first period and 2-1 after two frames. The Breakers outshot the Celtics 30-26. The Jungle Jim’s players of the game were the goalies for both teams — Mark Power for the Shore and Billy Dawe for Celtics.

There were 18 penalties called in the game, nine to each team.

Game 2 of the best-of-seven series will be played Friday, 7:40 p.m., at the Southern Shore Arena, with Game 3 set for Sunday, 5 p.m., back at the Jack Byrne Arena.

Meanwhile, there’s still one regular-season game to be played.

The match between Trinity-Placentia I.J. Smith Flyers and the C.B.N. MoorFrost Stars originally scheduled for the Bay Arena on Jan. 11 will be played this Friday at 7:15 p.m. at the same location.

In the meantime, the remaining quarterfin­al matchups get underway this weekend. On Saturday, the Stars travel to St. John’s for Game 1 against the Hickman Automotive Group Caps at Twin Rinks while the Avalon Roebothan McKay Marshall Capitals visit the Robert French Memorial Stadium in Kelligrews for Game 1 of their bestof-seven with the C.B.R. Assante Wealth Management Renegades. Game times are 7:40 and 8:10 p.m. respective­ly.

On Sunday evening at 7:15, the Flyers and the Mount Pearl Mark’s Dakota Wild open their series at the Glacier.
