Old Pleasantville building becomes graffiti target

-

2006

Canada Lands Company (CLC) purchases 60 acres of land in the Pleasantville area of St. John’s from Public Works and Government Services. The Department of National Defence (DND) is required to vacate the 16 buildings it occupies by January 2013.

2007

DND announces the purchase of 6.4 acres of land in Pleasantville for $800,000. The land will serve as the location for a new Canadian Forces Station St. John’s, covering approximately one-fifth of the space occupied by CFS St. John’s at that time. The new multi-purpose building has an estimated cost of $101 million.

2008

CLC unveils its plans for the area, which involve the construction of residential properties in the form of condominiums and houses. Altogether, approximately 960 units will be made available in the area.

2010

CLC breaks ground on its development, which will include commer- cial properties in addition to residential ones. Prime Minister Stephen Harper arrives in St. John’s later that year to do the same for the new CFS St. John’s construction site.

May 2013

A spokesman for DND says CFS St. John’s is 80 per cent completed and will be fully built by 2014. The cost to complete the building is valued at $150 million.
