Meet our athlete of the week
Swimmer Owen Daly is The Telegram sports department’s choice for athlete of the week.
At last weekend’s 2013 East Coast long course swimming championships held at the Aquarena in St. John’s, the 18year-old Daly was the top finisher in points among all competitors, and named the male swimmer of the meet after finishing first in six of his individual events.
The St. John’s Legends swimmer won the finals in the 50-metre, 100m and 200m freestyle, the 50m and 100m butterfly and the 200m individual medley. In the latter, he broke his father’s 32-yearold record with a time of 2:13.96.
Daly also helped the Legends relay team to a pair of first-place finishes in the the 200m and 400m freestyle disciplines. In the 400m, the team of Daly, Brandon McKay, Aaron Buckingham and Theoren Goosney broke a provincial record that stood since 1989 by posting a time of 3:38.14.
