Swimmer Owen Daly is The Telegram sports department’s choice for athlete of the week.

At last weekend’s 2013 East Coast long course swimming championsh­ips held at the Aquarena in St. John’s, the 18year-old Daly was the top finisher in points among all competitor­s, and named the male swimmer of the meet after finishing first in six of his individual events.

The St. John’s Legends swimmer won the finals in the 50-metre, 100m and 200m freestyle, the 50m and 100m butterfly and the 200m individual medley. In the latter, he broke his father’s 32-yearold record with a time of 2:13.96.

Daly also helped the Legends relay team to a pair of first-place finishes in the the 200m and 400m freestyle discipline­s. In the 400m, the team of Daly, Brandon McKay, Aaron Buckingham and Theoren Goosney broke a provincial record that stood since 1989 by posting a time of 3:38.14.
