Big wins for provincial U18 boys as Eastern Canadians begin
Newfoundland’s Statoil under-18 boys teams romped to a pair of wins Friday as the five-division Eastern Canadian rugby championships opened in St. John’s.
The Newfoundlanders defeated Prince Edward Island 43-0 and Nova Scotia 43-10 at the Swilers Complex.
In the win over P.E.I., Kieran Lacey had two tries, with the others coming from Sean O’Grady, Gud Bjarnson, Kaelen Mahoney and Matthew Murphy.
Tony Pomroy had three conversions, with another from Marc Petro.
In Newfoundland’s second win, Ryan Subject had four tries, with singles coming from Sam Newhook, Mitch Ryan, Patrick Dalton and Petro. Pomroy had two conversions, with Malcolm Salmon kicking the other.
In other U18 games Friday, New Brunswick shut out P.E.I. 15-0 and downed Nova Scotia 18-7.
In under-16 male play, Newfoundland beat P.E.I. 21-5, but lost to New Brunswick 34-5. In another game in the division, New Brunswick blanked P.E.I. 390.
In senior women’s play, Nova Scotia downed Newfoundland 23-19 in a twogame total-points series, with a rematch 1 p.m. today at Swilers,
Round-robin and cross-over games in the age-group divisions are on the slate at Swilers today, with medal games on Sunday.
