Readings

Breakwater Books and The Artisan Inn present Joan Sullivan, winner of the 2013 Rogers Communication Prize for Non-Fiction, Saturday, July 13 at 12:30 p.m. in the Twine Loft at The Artisan Inn. A soldier dies, a community vanishes…and a story is found. When Steven Norris—a lieutenant with the famed Royal Newfoundland Regiment—dies at the battle of Gueudecourt in 1916, his family business is left without an heir. With the end of the Norris family mill, the once thriving town of Three Arms disappears. Almost 90 years later, a high-school theatre class mounts a successful musical based on the life and death of Steven Norris. When the curtain drops, a group of actors, teachers, and parents embark on a camping expedition to Three Arms where they stumble upon the actual artifacts of Norris’s young life. A compelling history — part narrative, part documentary, part drama — Joan Sulli- van’s “In the Field” reminds us how one soldier’s great sacrifice can resonate long after he has fallen. Sullivan is the editor of the Newfoundland Quarterly. As a freelance journalist, her interviews, reviews and commentary have appeared in The Telegram, The Globe and Mail and on CBC Radio's “Tapestry.” A playwright, director and actor, Sullivan has most recently appeared as guest director at the Grand Bank Regional Theatre Festival and in cahoots with the Document Theatre Collective in St. John's. Free Admission; all are welcome. Refreshments will be served. Marlene Creates leads a walk with readings of site-specific poems in the Boreal Poetry Garden — six acres of boreal forest where she lives in Portugal Cove — with musical responses to the site provided by three acoustic musicians. After the walk, participants will gather around a bonfire with some refreshments. On Wednesday, July 17 at 7:30 p.m., poetry will be provided by Creates, who will be joined by percussionist Rob Power. Creates and flutist Rozalind MacPhail are scheduled for Tuesday, July 23 at 7:30 p.m. and Creates will join with Ilia Nicoll Sunday Aug. 4 at 2 p.m. for poetry and music on the violin and viola. Each event is limited to 25 people. For directions and to register contact marlene.creates@nf.sympatico.ca or phone 709895-1020. Cost is $25 for adults or $20 students and seniors. Pre-registration is required.
