Marin-ating ... in remote rage
A couple of years ago I wrote about remote rage. That’s the overwhelming feeling you get when someone on TV does or says something so overwhelmingly stupid, you just want to fling your remote control at the screen.
Some channels excel at inducing remote rage. Cable news stations come to mind immediately. Even C-SPAN at times, depending on who’s talking.
But that’s nothing compared to watching sports. Underperforming athletes are probably the biggest cause of rage, especially the well-paid ones. (Aren’t they all?) How often has one of your teams or favorite players failed to come through in the clutch?
How many times have you cursed at Phil Mickelson as he let yet another U.S. Open slip away by missing a shot you’ve made a dozen times on the local links?
Tell me you folks in Pittsburgh didn’t want to throw something when much-maligned Tim Tebow threw that touchdown pass in the opening seconds of overtime in the AFC Championship a few years ago in Denver.
And I know Boston fans who still haven’t gotten over wanting to crucify Bill Buckner when that little ground ball went through his legs in Game 6 of the World Series nearly 30 years ago.
