Another provincial junior baseball title for Caps

Make it five straight titles for St. John’s after it edges Mount Pearl in Sunday’s final

The St. John’s Capitals posted an unbeaten record in winning the 2013 provincial junior baseball crown Sunday at Jubilee Field in Corner Brook.

The Capitals completed their perfect weekend by downing Mount Pearl 6-5 in the goldmedal game to take the AJ “Ank” Murphy Memorial Trophy.

It’s a fifth straight provincial title for the Capitals, who earn the right to play in the 2013 national junior championsh­ip Aug. 15-19 in Dartmouth, N.S.

Matt Murphy, who was the tournament’s most valuable player, was the winning pitcher Sunday, allowing five runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts in six innings on the mound,

Brandon Jackson, who allowed four runs on three hits and one walk in just over two innings of work, took the loss,

The Caps finished in first place in the fourteam tournament with a 3-0 record in roundrobin play. Mount Pearl was second in roundrobin play with a 2-1 record to earn a shot at the undefeated Capitals, while the host Corner Brook Junior Barons finished with a 1-2 record and Gander finished in the cellar at 0-3.

Steve Phillips and Charlie Kelly are the coaches.
