RCMP supports Special Olympics club
Community members gathered with local RCMP and athletes from the Tri-Con Gentle Giants Special Olympics Club July 6 for the 2013 Trinity/Conception Bay North Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR).
The event began at the Beaver Plaza Mall in Bay Roberts and ended at the Bay Arena with a barbecue, celebrations and activities, including a dunk tank.
The LETR is an international event and is held within communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador by law enforcement officers.
“Supporting the Special Olympics is an important role of the RCMP in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Tri-Con Gentle Giants train and compete throughout the year and this is our way of showing appreciation for their dedication,” said Const. Daniel Sharpe. “Our annual LETR event raises awareness and funds which help our Special Olympics athletes compete in games provincially, nationally and internationally.” The Trinity/Conception Bay North LETR is the largest fundraising event for the Tri-Con Gentle Giants. With a total of 40 athletes, this year alone the club raised more than $17,000. The funds go towards supporting the club’s activities throughout the year, including the provincial games, which will take place July 18-21. The club will travel to St. John’s and Mount Pearl to participate in the provincial games. The athletes will compete in swimming, athletics and bowling. “The LETR is the club's major fundraiser. Athletes have an opportunity to raise money to support athletic programming that meets both their physical and social needs,” said Gina Bishop, club co-ordinator of the Tri-Con Gentle Giants. “I would like to extend a warm thank you to the athletes, organizing volunteers and members of the community who have pledged their support to our organization this year. We couldn't do it without you.”
In addition to the fundraising conducted by athletes, long-sleeved LETR shirts are sold at varying locations throughout the province, including the Motor Vehicle Registration office in Harbour Grace.
