Bronze medal for Kelly’s Pub at international under-21 event
The Kelly's Pub Junior Canadians, representing Newfoundland and Labrador, dropped a 5-2 decision to New Zealand and settled for a bronze medal at the 2013 U21 Men’s International Softball Championships in Saskatoon Sunday.
With the loss, the Junior Canadians finished the tournament with a 6-3 overall record.
In earlier playoff games, the Newfoundlanders lost to Ontario 5-4, blanked Alberta 7-0 and defeated Argentina 6-1.
Against Argentina and Ontario, Mark Power went the distance on the mound for Kelly’s Pub, striking out 10 batters in each game. In the loss to Ontario, Ryan Kirk and Troy Leonard both homered for the Junior Canadians, with Kirk driving in three of his team’s four runs.
In the win over Alberta, Colin Walsh pitched the shutout and helped his own cause with two RBIs, one of them coming on a solo home run. Kirk also drove in two runs.
Walsh took the loss against New Zealand. Jeremy O’Reilly had two hits for the Newfoundland team and Johnny Doyle homered.
