Passed peacefully away at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home on Monday, July 15, 2013, Eileen Dicks, age 91 years. Predecease­d by her husband Ronald ( 1998) and brothers: Edward ( Ted) and James Woodhead. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories her son, Keith; brother, William; sisters-in-law: Vera Woodhead and Lillian Dicks; brotherin-law: Eric Dicks; many nieces and nephews in Canada and England and other relatives and f riends. Many thanks to the doctors, nurses, staff and Sisters of Mercy at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home. Thanks and gratitude is also extended to Rose Hayes for her wonderful care and devotion. Eileen joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) during WWII and reached the level of Sergeant. During her tenure she met her future husband, Ronald who was a Staff Sergeant with the 166th Newfoundla­nd Field Regiment, Royal Artillery while he was training in England. They were later married on Bell Island in 1946. Eileen was a very active member in the communitie­s of Bell Island and St. John’s in which she lived and was involved with the Wabana Drama Group and Girls Auxiliary Club. She was a member of the War Brides Associatio­n and the Writers Alliance of Newfoundla­nd and served as Treasurer and President of the Newfoundla­nd Writers Guild. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road with visitation on Wednesday from 7 - 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Topsail on Friday, July 19, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Topsail. Donations in Eileen’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, St. Patrick’s Mercy Home Foundation or to a charity of one’s choice.
