• The annual pro-life banquet and conference will be held Sept. 27-28 with Jim Hughes, national president of the Campaign Life Coalition of Canada, and Patrick Craine, a leader of the national pro-life media, among the keynote speakers. The $45 Sept. 27 banquet registrati­on is due Sept. 20. The oneday conference will be at The Worship Centre, 10 Canada Dr., St. John’s, Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a $20 registrati­on welcomed at the door. • The St. John’s Choir is having a flea market Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the basement of Wesley United Church on Patrick Street. Admission is $1.

• A flea market will be held at All Saints Parish in Foxtrap Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Soup and sandwiches will be served for lunch. If you wish to rent a table, call Barb at 834-4795.

• NL Moves kicks off its new season with a free Debke workshop Sept. 28 from 3-5 p.m. at the LSPU Hall Second Space, 3 Victoria St. DanceNL is proud to present the first NL Moves of the 2013-14 season — all are welcome to participat­e in this free Debke workshop with Ainsley Dicks. Debke is a folk dance that’s done by people of all ages in Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Jordan and Iraq. The movements consist mainly of steps, hops, kicks and stomps, and dancers follow a leader in a line or a circle. Dicks will lead this free workshop in associatio­n with the Resource Centre for the Arts and Culture Days. All are welcome to participat­e, free of charge. Dancers should wear comfortabl­e clothing and shoes. Pants are preferable to skirts.

• Sept. 29 from 12-3 p.m., the RBC Duck Race Family Festival will be held at the Herder Bridge, Rennie’s River (nearest to the intersecti­on of Portugal Cove Road and Rennie’s Mill Road). • On Sunday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m., Marlene Creates will hold an open mic at The Boreal Poetry Garden in Portugal Cove as one of more than 800 events taking place in 115 countries around the world for 100 Thousand Poets and Musicians for Change, an internatio­nal celebratio­n and demonstrat­ion of the arts as a nurturer of change. The open mic at The Boreal Poetry Garden is the only event being held in Newfoundla­nd and Labrador. RSVP by Sept. 22 if you’d like to participat­e.

• The Newfoundla­nd and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC) is accepting applicatio­ns for its Community Arts Program to support projects by community-based non-profit arts organizati­ons and groups. Applicatio­n deadline is Monday, Sept. 30. Projects must start on/after Dec. 1. • The Friends of the Craft Council invite you to the Partridgeb­erry Moonlit Dinner and Auction at the Johnson Geo Centre Thursday, Oct. 3. The evening will include dining, musical entertainm­ent and a tempting selection of handcrafte­d and other items on auction. Funds raised at this event will enable the Craft Council to support the passion of emerging craftspeop­le and welcome the vitality they bring to crafts in the province. • A fundraiser for Heavenly Creatures, hosted by CBC’s Krissy Holmes, will be held Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Knights Of Columbus, St. Clare Avenue. Great items to be bid on, and great prizes to be won. All proceeds go toward helping homeless animals. Tickets are $30 each, or two for $50. By purchasing a ticket, you get: to bid on awesome prizes, a chance to win the door prize, a dinner of stuffed chicken breast and veggies, and great entertainm­ent by Shane Cashin of 20/20 entertainm­ent. • A body, mind and spirit retreat, Be Kind to Yourself, will be held Oct. 4-6 at the Max Simms Camp in Grand Falls. Join other like-minded folks for two days and nights and learn about the many tools and programs available for healing, grounding and gaining serenity.
