Sea-Hawks will be busy in New Brunswick this weekend

It’s the sort of weekend that can often make or break a team.

Beginning today, the Memorial Sea-Hawks men’s and women’s soccer teams are each into a stretch of three road games in three days as part of their Atlantic University Sport (AUS) schedules.

Sea-Hawks women’s coach Walt Mavin said, that instead of dreading having to play three games in less than 48 hours, his team is “anxious to get going” after having been out of action since Sept. 8.

“We’re looking forward to getting on the road. It gives the players an opportunity to get completely focused and away from any of the distractions at home,” he said.

Mavin’s team only took two days off from practice during the down time and also played an exhibition game against an allstar team of local players.

The Memorial women are 2-0, while the men are 0-2.

Winning sweeps would put both teams in good shape, while triple losses could amount to crippling setbacks even in the early part of the season, especially for the men. A split in points would probably be enough to satisfy both the MUN clubs. “I’d be happy with six points,” said Mavin. “It’s over quarter of our season in three days, but if we can get a least three points, you are in the (playoff) mix for sure.

“That’s what we are hoping for, but we know we are in for some tough games.”

All this weekend’s games will be in New Brunswick. The MUN teams take on the UNB Varsity Reds today; the University of Moncton Blue Eagles Saturday; and the Mount Allison Mounties Sunday. On the men’s side, UNB is 2-1; Moncton 2-0 and Mount Allison 1-3, while on the women’s side, Moncton is 3-1; Mount Alli- son 0-4 and UNB 1-1-2.

Mavin said despite Mount Allison’s winless record, the Mounties are no pushovers.

“They lost by a 1-0 score to Dalhousie Tigers (2-1) in their last game,” he noted.

Mavin will take 16 players on the road and hopes he will be in a position early in the threegame series to give a few of his starters some rest.

In its season-opening games at home, the Lady Hawks didn’t given up a goal with a pair of 2-0 wins over Saint Mary’s Huskies.

The MUN men’s team lost 1-0 in both of their games against SMU.
