Shortly after being crowned Miss Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador last November, Kandice Power set an ambitious goal for herself — to attend 100 events during her year-long reign.
The 19-year-old, second-year Memorial University student is optimistic she’ll reach that goal by the time she crowns her successor on Nov. 10.
“I started off with a bang. I did five events in my first week and I’ve continued going.
“I have about 17 more events to attend to reach my 100 mark,” Power said Wednesday.
Miss Achievement N.L. is a scholarship program for young women aged 13-18.
Power volunteers with numerous organizations including Kids Eat Smart Foundation, Short Circuit Dream Fund, Ronald McDonald House and Special Olympics.
A four-time winner of the Paradise Youth of the Year Award, she won the Avalon Achievement Scholarship Competition in 2010 and a provincial government URock Award earlier this year for her volunteer work in the community. Power competed in Miss Achievement N.L. on three occasions. The third time was a charm, she says.
“These competitions are based on academics, your public speaking abilities, how you can converse with the judges and how confident you present yourself. … So just the process of competing and meeting so many like-minded people, betters you, no matter where you place.”
