MUN weekend roundup
The Memorial Sea-Hawks women’s basketball team finished 1-2 at the Redbird Classic at McGill University in Montreal, but coach Doug Partridge was “very pleased” with her team’s effort during the weekend tournament.
MUN’s only win was a 55-49 decision over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. The Sea-Hawks lost 76-69 to Western Mustangs and 6243 to McGill Martlets.
“I would have liked to win the Western game,” said Partridge, “but we played hard, played fast and defended well for a young team.”
Sandra Amoah, who was named a tournament all-star, led the Lady Hawks with 21 points. Chante Clarke chipped in with nine points and five rebounds in the team’s win.
The Sea-Hawks led 32-16 at the half.
McGill 62, MUN 43
Western 76, Memorial 69
Rookie Sydney Ezekiel paced the Sea-Hawks with 16 points.
Kelia Pond added 12 and rookies Brooklyn Wright and Lindsay Taylor chipped in with 10 each. Wright was tops for Memorial with nine points and Amoah scored eight.
Partridge singled out several players for solid performance in the tourney.
“Brooklyn Wright, our 6-2 wing, had a good tournament,” said Partridge, noting she hit 40 percent of her three-point shots.
“Sydney Ezekiel had a great game against Western and defended well. She looks like the real deal and Chante Clarke is a great athlete.
Partridge sees good things ahead, “If we can find some post players to help us rebound the ball and improve our defense.
“We have some very good firstyear players and have set our program up for a good run over the next five years.
“We have to get better on the boards,” added the veteran MUN mentor.
“Rebounding was our big weakness.”
MUN MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Memorial men defeated Brock Badgers 86-78 in overtime on the final day of the 46th annual Naismith Classic in Waterloo, Ont., Sunday to finish 1-2.
“We played some good games. .. good progression overall,” coach Peter Benoite told The Telegram.
Ryan Wood hit on all 14 of his free throw attempts in the game while scoring a team-high 20 points with nine rebounds to pace the win.
Vasilije Curcic chipped in with 14 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks while Caleb Gould had 13 points with 12 rebounds.
Rookie Jacob Ranton, playing in his hometown, also chipped in with 13 points for MUN.
Laurier 86 Memorial 56
Wilfrid Laurier defeated Memorial in the opening game of the Classic
The halftime score was 36-29 for Laurier.
Wood led the Sea-Hawks with 11 points in the loss.
Waterloo 76 Memorial 67
The host Waterloo Warriors used a strong opening quarter to propel them to victory over MUN Saturday.
The Warriors outscored the SeaHawks 27-14 in the first quarter. The Sea-Hawks battled back in the second quarter to cut the lead to eight at the half.
Curcic contributed 31 points and nine rebounds in the loss. Wood added 16 points for Memorial.
Noel Moffatt was forced to sit out the games against Waterloo and Brock to rest an ankle he injured in the Laurier game.
Memorial will open their AUS regular season at the Field House when they host Saint Mary’s Huskies Nov. 9.
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues used a fourth quarter run to defeat the Memorial Sea-Hawks 7359 in CIS exhibition basketball play in Mississauga on Thursday night.
