McCarthy, Earle first-round leaders at junior provincial­s

Jack McCarthy of Clovelly in St. John’s is the first-round leader at the Royal LePage junior/juvenile/bantam golf championsh­ips after carding a 79 in play Wednesday at the Osprey Course of the Clovelly Golf Course in St. John’s

McCarthy leads fellow Clovelly member Drew Stonehouse for the overall championsh­ip by one stroke. Sitting one shot back of Stonehouse is another Clovelly member, Nathan Peters, who recorded a score of 81.

In the juvenile division, Jack McCarthy leads the field with a score of 79, again followed by Stonehouse with Mitchell McGrath of Glendennin­g Golf holding down third place, carding an 82 after the first round.

Matthew Bonnell of Blomidon Golf Club and Nash Denic of Clovelly are tied with a score of 82 in the bantam division followed by Evan D'Angelo also of Clovelly and Michael Simms who are tied for third with an identical score of 85.

In the girls’ division, Angela Earle of Blomidon Golf Club in Corner Brook recorded a 103 to take a three-stroke lead over Lorraine Coleman. Coleman sits one stroke ahead of Jillian Lawlor, both of Clovelly.

As part of the event, a number contests were held including a flop shot and longest drive competitio­ns.

In the flop shot contest, Lorraine Coleman was the top girl,while Evan D'Angelo won the 14-and-under boys and Mitchell McGrath the 18 and under.

In the longest drive competitio­n, Taylor Cormier from Blomidon Golf Club won the girls’ division while D’Angelo claimed the boys’ 14-andunder and Drew Stonehouse took the male 18-and-under contest. During the initial day of competitio­n hole No. 3 was designated for a closest to the pin contest with Taylor Cormier the winner for the girls and D’Angelo for the boys.
