Second to none this time
Max Athletics and RMM, runners-up at Lady Lake last year, take 2014 championships
After finishing second in the championship races last year, ladies’ crew Roebothan McKay Marshall (RMM) and men’s team MAX Athletics exacted a measure of revenge in the 152nd Harbour Grace Regatta Saturday.
At Lady Lake, RMM posted a time of five minutes and 24.85 seconds to dash any chance at a Triple Crown for the MAX Athletics girls (5:27.09), who claimed the 2013 title by under a second. Their MAX male counterparts, however, crossed the line in a blistering 9:54.19, a full 21 seconds faster than Toyota Plaza, last year’s championship crew and triple crown winners.
Men’s crew Bussey Horwood, Placentia winners and fastest boat at the Royal St. John’s Regatta Time Trials, didn’t take part in Harbour Grace.
Members of the women’s champs, cox’ed by Gord Delaney, are Amanda Ryan, Meghan Kavanagh, Beth Davis, Chairmaine Wiseman, Tina Hunt, Wendi Young and spare Alison Jones.
Ellsworth Estates was third in the women’s final in 5:38.00 and India Gate clocked a 5:41.07 to finish fourth.
The men’s champs are Charlie Price, Andrew Williams, Alex Brandt, Eric Hann-Quinn, Andrew Bonnell and Frank Norris and cox Colin Pike.
In the men’s championship race, Magma Contracting & Management crossed the line in 11:03.23 for third and Counter Corner took fourth with an 11:56.89.
The Royal St. John’s Regatta is scheduled for Aug. 6, weather permitting.
