Provincial boys’ U17 team suffers first loss at nationals

The Newfoundla­nd and Labrador under-17 boys fell to 2-1 at the national U17 basketball championsh­ips in Edmonton Alberta on Saturday with an 85-70 loss to Ontario. Game details were not available before the Telegram’s press deadline. On Saturday, Liam Dunphy has 17 points and Brett Warren added another 16 as they defeated British Columbia 75-56.

In their tourney opener Friday evening, Cole Long drained 33 points as Newfoundla­nd and Labrador defeated Saskatchew­an 77-64. Warren chipped in with 18 in the win.

Their female counterpar­ts, meanwhile fell to 0-3 with a 56-45 loss to Quebec on Sunday. Kelsey Moore led the provincial side with 15 points. On Saturday, Team NL lost 59-56 to New Brunswick, with Moore scoring 14, and were trounced 75-49 by Saskatchew­an. Ashley Collin has 13 points.

In girls’ under-15 play, Sarah Hiscock had 14 points in a 65-47 loss to Alberta. The team dropped an 88-39 decision to British Columbia in a game late Friday. Kaleigh Sellars led with 8 points.

The under-15 boys, are also winless after three games, including a 68-62 loss to Saskatchew­an. Benjamin Rogers was the top scorer with 15. On Saturday, the boys fell 63-55 to British Columbia, with Jordan Ryan bucketing 18, and were defeated 87-64 by New Brunswick. Emanuel Ring had 15 points.

In Monday’s games, the U15 boys play Manitoba, while both female teams will take on Nova Scotia. All games underway at 7:15 Newfoundla­nd time.
