A bolder look at you

- Thane Burnett Director of Content, TC Media

If you really adore chocolate cake — down to your toes that curl with each forkful — how do you explain what that is like? I’m trying to tell you how I feel about the printed word.

That a freshly pressed newspaper just makes me happy.

Because ink on paper holds the possibility of the best story I’ll ever read.

Which brings me to the paper you’re now holding.

You’ve likely noticed it looks different today that ever before. It’s part of a major redesign of our Newfoundland and Labrador newspapers, as well as sister dailies and weekly publications across the East Coast and into Saskatchewan.

Some of the differences are distinct, including the dramatic orange of the masthead and a slightly reduced width size.

The size difference makes our broadsheets less cumbersome to read as you travel and the orange is what we strive to be — bolder ever day.

And that’s where we hope to show you the real difference — in our new emphasis on colourful and daring stories and engaging photos.

We’re going to spend less space on following bureaucratic agendas and even more time setting our journalists loose to chase the beating hearts in our communities.

We will walk down paths that we’ve driven past. We will knock on doors we’ve ignored.

You will see more local faces in these pages, as well as on our website.

Hopefully, including your own.

Oh, and speaking of our website, this new approach in print compliments what we’re doing online.

Our privilege is to chronicle your life, debates, victories and hurdles.

I love the printed word more than that chocolate cake. And want to share the feeling.

So I hope you will find these new pages — and those ahead — worthy of a promise from us all. To contain the best stories you’ve ever read.

Which, it so happens, are yours.

Our privilege is to chronicle your life, debates, victories and hurdles.
