IN short

-

Dan Reardon is penning a book on Edgar Hartery. Similarly, Gerard Doran is writing a book on the 1901 Outer Cove rowing crew. ... The committee looking to stage the 2017 Brier in St. John’s has received 915 $50 deposits towards a full event pass. Not bad. Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. has indicated it wants the 2017 Brier as well. “Now it’s even more incumbent on us to put our best foot forward and prove to the Canadian Curling Association that St. John’s is the best candidate to host this prestigious event,” said Brier bid committee chairman Gene Trickett. ... If Newfoundland and Labrador hopes to do anything when it plays host to the 2021 Canada Summer Games — it’s only six years away — the province will need to step up with additional funding for training, and those funds will have to be disbursed to sports that have been showing results. In other words, if teams have questionable training programs and miserable results, they will not be funded the same as sports which have a strategic plan outlined and results to back it up. There is no reason why Newfoundland and Labrador cannot be beating P.E.I., New Brunswick and, in a lot of cases, Nova Scotia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. That should and must be our goal. I’m fed up looking at ninth and 10th-place finishes and hearing all about how well we represented our province. Enough of the loser attitude, already
